Hip protection pants are used mainly for protecting the hips from impact damage. This type of pants is worn day and night and needs to be comfortable. Conventional models are often equipped with hard protective shields that may cause discomfort, or soft but non-ventilated ones that will not allow the skin to breathe.

Every year at least 19,000 Swedes fracture their hips. Most of them as the result of a fall. Many of these fractures might have been avoided had some sort of hip protection been used. But hip protection pants are often considered uncomfortable and for that reason, many prefer to go without.

Recovering from a hip fracture takes time and the quality of life for those affected is severely reduced. The rehabilitation costs are high – in Sweden, every third bed in an orthopaedic ward is occupied by a patient recovering from a hip fracture (Socialstyrelsen 2003).
